LANscape® Building Backbone Solutions

The building backbone connects the main cross-connect with each telecommunications closet in the building. The cable runs may be vertical through a riser space in the case of a multi-story building and/or horizontal in the case of a large single story building such as a manufacturing facility. Optical fiber has become the medium of choice for these applications because of its ability to support multiple high speed networks in a very small cable without cross talk concerns. In some cases, fiber is being used to support voice applications by placing small, remote PBX shelves at the telecommunications closet, eliminating the need for copper altogether.

While the building backbone is not subjected to the same environmental rigors as the campus backbone, it is subject to building codes for smoke and fire propagation. For this environment, Corning Cable Systems pioneered the tight-buffered cable design. The MIC® cable is flame-retardant while being small and flexible. It uses Corning Cable Systems' unique TBII buffering technology to aid the fast and efficient termination process. Managing fiber terminations in the closet locations is a forte for Corning Cable Systems. A wide range of wall- and rack-mountable housings are available to provide high density while maintaining ease of management and identification of cables and patch cords.
